Aquaporins Flashcards
NMO
Neuromyelitis Optic is an autoimmune disease induced by a specific auto-antibody, the NMO IgG.
NMO Ab affects the optic nerve and spinal cord by targeting Aquaporin 4. Aquaporin 4 has very high concentrations around ventricles to make CSF. Results in complement activation.
Female: Male = 9:1
Another name for NMO
Devic disease
Specific biomarker for NMO
NMO IgG
Where is CSF produced
Produced by the chorioid plexus of each ventricle. (epithelial derrived)
Flow pathway of CSF
Travels through the ventricles and into the subarachnoid space via the medial and lateral apertures. Some CSF travels through the central canal of the spinal cord. It flows through the subarachnoid space and absorbed into the dural cavity.
How does restasis work?
Targets aquaporins to increase tear production.
