What are the S&S of DKA?

A

any patient with:

  • pre-existing history of diabetes
  • BGL >11 and
  • clinical features of DKA
  • > confusion, signs of dehydration, Kussmaul’s breathing

What are the S&S of Hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic state (HHS)?

A
  • typically older pt’s
  • Have high BGL >30
  • do not present with features of DKA such as kussmauls breathing

  • dehydration
  • tachypnoea
  • Polydipsia
  • Polyphagia
  • Polyuria
  • Kussmauls breathing
  • Hx diabetes

What is the treatment for a pt with BGL >11?

A

Normal saline 20ml/kg titrated to perfusion status

  • > consult if further doses required
  • consider reduced volume for old or pts with renal failure
  • consider antiemeteic
