Correlations Flashcards
Correlation
Illustrates the strength and direction of association between two co variables. There is no manipulation of variables so no cause and effect relationship can be established.
Types of Correlation
Positive, Negative, Zero
Positive Correlation
When both variables move in the same direction, both increasing, or both decreasing.
Negative Correlation
One variable increasing, whilst the other decreases.
Zero Correlation
No relationship between variables.
Correlation Coefficient
Number produced from data of correlational study once a statistical test is carried out. Tells how strong relationship is and how closely variable linked and type of correlation. Between -1and 1. -1 = perfect negative correlation, 1 = perfect positive correlation
Strengths
Quick and economical to carry out. No need to control environment or manipulate variables and secondary data used.
Allows for topics where unethical to manipulate variables.
Assesses possible further research areas. Precise, quantifiable measure of how two variables related so if significant may justify further research.
Weaknesses
Misrepresent correlations as cause and effect.
Lack of experimental manipulation and now control so don’t know who causing who and possibility of third variable.
