correlation and stats Flashcards
mean
average of the scores in a sample
mode
most frequently occuring score
median
middle value in a ranked set of scores
in an even number set of scores, the median is the average of the two middle scores
variability
the amount of difference among the scores
how much the data VARIES
range
the difference between the lowest and highest score
variance
a measure of the spread, or dispersion, of scores
measures how far each number in the set is from the mean (average), and thus from every other number in the set.
standard deviation
the square root of the variance, so the variability can be studied
Left/Negative Skew
Mean is SMALLER than the median
-curve with the longer tail on the left
ex:most scores are high but a few bad scores drag the curve to the left
Right/Positive Skew
Mean is LARGER than the median
-curve with the longer tail on the right
ex:most scores are small, a few are high that drag curve to the right
P-value
P less than 0.05
Statistical Significance
To prove that the difference between the two groups was actually do to the IV
-This exists when p < 0.05
correlation coefficients
Direction and strength of a relationship between two variables
