Copper Flashcards

1
Q

How is copper absorbed?

A

Active transport and diffusion in small intestine

Ranges from 21-70% depending on availability

No mucosal block, but excess binds to metallothianien

Q

What is the function of copper?

A
  • cofactor of copper superoxide dismutase (stop free radicals)
  • cofactor in electron transport chain
  • cross linking of elastin and collagen
  • cofactor to ceruloplasmin: so helps oxidise Fe2+ to Fe3+ for transport. When copper is low the transport of iron from enterocytes will be low
