Chloride Flashcards
1
Q
How is chlorine absorbed?
A
It follows sodium absorption, electrical neutrality
In both small and large intestine
Good efficiency
2
Q
How is chlorine excreted?
A
GI tracts, skin and kidneys
3
Q
What happens when chlorine cannot be transported into cells properly?
A
A genetic dysfunction in the chlorine transporter proteins in epithelial cell membrane of many organs (lungs, liver, pancreas, GIT, reproductive tract, skin) results in the production of thick mucus in people with cystic fibrosis
4
Q
What are the functions of chloride?
A
- electrical neutrality; balances sodium
- main anion for ECF
- fluid balance
- acid/base balance
- nerve impulse transmission
5
Q
What is caused by a chlorine deficiency?
A
- loss of appetite
- failure to thrive
- muscle weakness, lethargy, convulsions
- severe metabolic alkalosis
