Controls Flashcards
1
Q
What are resistors?
A
- Resist current flow
- Measured in Ohms
2
Q
What are thermistors?
A
They change resistance when temperature changes
3
Q
What are inductors?
A
- Resist any change in current flow
Stores energy in a magnetic field - A coil of wire & metal core
- Inductance measured in henrys
4
Q
What are capacitors?
A
Store electrostatic energy
5
Q
What are Semiconductors?
A
- A mix of a conductor & insulator,it’s resistance fall as the temperature rises
- Measured in Siemens
6
Q
What are transistors?
A
Little switches made from silicone
It ensures the circuit is on if the current is flowing and switched off if it isn’t.
7
Q
What are thermocouples?
A
Detects temperature by generating voltage
8
Q
What do actuators do?
A
They correct & adjust the machinery to ensure its working correctly
9
Q
Open loop control
Types of control systems (how a system works & how it’s controlled)
A
- A system that needs outside feedback to make adjustments
ie; a boiler on a timer will keep heating until the timer stops, regardless of the outside temp.
10
Q
Closed loop system
Types of control systems (how a system works & how it’s controlled)
A
- Monitors & sends feedback to itself.
ie: a boiler with a termostat ,monitors room temp to maintain a specific temperature without outside input (turns itself off & on)
