Sick leave may be used by employees for what (5) reasons?
- Illness or Injury
- Public Health Requirement
- Doctor’s Appointment (4 hours maximum for any one appointment)
- Bereavement
- Medical Emergency (48 hours of vacation leave may be used per fiscal year as a one-time provision)
What is Bereavement Leave?
- Absent themselves from work due to the death of a member of their immediate family
- Maximum of 48 hours per occurrence
- The Sheriff/Designee may grant up to 240 hours for bereavement leave
Upon using ‘Sick Leave’, how much time does the employee have to file and sign a sick leave request upon returning back to work?
24 hours
If a supervisor has concerns reference sick leave abuse, who shall he consult with to ensure consistent application of the sick leave section of contract?

What are allowed places an employee may be at or attend while on sick leave status?
- Place of residence
- Medical facility
- Doctor’s office
- Or shall notify their supervisor of their whereabouts
- If Sheriff approves in advance, the employee may be at gainful employment, pursuit of personal business, recreation, travel for recreation. If NOT, it is considered abuse of sick leave*
How many shifts does a subject in the military have to use for active duty or inactive duty for training?
30 shifts
When will an employee provide their immediate supervisor with documentation establishing reserve status and unit assignment?
At the beginning of each calendar year or change of status/assignment
How long in advance, if possible will an employee provide his immediate supervisor an application of leave reference military duty?
2 weeks
When will the employee provide an annual training schedule, or orders in case of active duty, after such documentation becomes available to the employee?
By the first schedule work day
Are emails an acceptable means of transmission in regards to military documents (training schedule, earning statements and DD214’s)?
No
How long after a deployment does an employee have to submit appropriate documentations?
30 days
If an employee has approved scheduled vacation leave, will that leave be cancelled due to granted military leave?
No
-‘approved scheduled vacation’ means any vacation request submitted to the immediate supervisor 2 weeks or more in advance and is approved
If an employee do not designate what type of leave is used for FMLA, what order shall ‘leave’ be used after comp-time is used.
- Sick
- Vacation
- Professional
- Bonus
- Leave without pay
Does FMLA have to be used in one continuous leave period?
Yes
Unless special circumstances clearly show a legitimate need for broken periods of leave
If both husband and wife work for LVMPD, are they both each entitled to 6 months of leave for FMLA?
Yes
