Construction Technology Flashcards
What are the elements of a construction?
Facilitating works, substructure, superstructure, internal finishes, FFE, services, prefab bldgs or units, work to existing buildings, external works
What is temporary works?
Temporary works are the elements of the construction that are needed to facilitate the construction of the permanent works and will, most often, be removed once construction is complete
What is slip forming and jump forming?
Slip forming - repetitive structure constantly moving upwards during installations
Jump forming - significant height is casted, where whole module is moved up.
What is the typical wall thickness of brick walls and block walls?
Germany - DIM Brick wall 240x115x71mm Block wall 490x115x238
What are the types of foundation?
Raft, piles, isolated, strip
What are the types of piles?
Sheet, secant, bored, precast
What is the purpose of a site investigation?
Suitability, design, construction, contamination, soil materials
What are the commonly used materials for superstructure?
concrete frames, steel frames
What are their advantages and disadvantages of concrete frames?
Concrete Frames
Advantage - Inherent fire protection, reduced cashflow, low maintenance, good sound and insulation, ideal for complex structures
Disadvantage - more time consuming, delicate for inclement weather. larger sizes hence bigger footings, steel reinforcement fluctuates
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Steel Frames?
Steel Frames
Advantage - Quicker to assemble, recycable, good for long span, lighter structure hence lesser footings, invulnerable to termites, fungi
Disadvantage - Requires fire protection, Fixing and fitting maintenance, steel price fluctuates, not suitable for complex design, builders are market expensive.
What is intumescent paint?
Intumescent coatings are passive fire protection measures which swell up when heated (in a fire for example) and protect the material (steel, plasterboard or wood ) underneath it, from fire
What is RIBA plan of work?
The RIBA Plan of Work organises the process of briefing, designing, constructing and operating building projects into eight stages and explains the stage outcomes, core tasks and information exchanges required at each stage.
What are the stages?
Strategic Definition, Preparation and Briefing, Concept Design, Spatial Coordination, Technical Design, Manufacturing and Construction, Handover, Use
What is HAOI? What is LP?
Under the HOAI (Honorarordnung für Architekten und Ingenieure) in Germany, the work of architects and engineers is divided into distinct phases, each representing a different stage of the project lifecycle. LP (Leistungsphasen)
What are the LP stages?
Basic evaluation, Preliminary design, design development, approval planning, preparation for contract award, assistance with contract award, construction supervision, project completion and documentation.
