Concentration Flashcards
Define ‘Concentration’
Concentration is the ability of a performer to remain focussed on a task for a specific period of time
What are the three types of concentration?
Sustained
Intense
Short
Give an example of a sport that uses these types of concentration
A) Sustained
B) Intense
C) Short
A) Distance running
B) Sprinting
C) Field Events
How can concentration positively impact on performance?(1)
Able to block out external distractions
How can concentration positively impact on performance?(2)
Aware of the movement of the game
How can concentration negatively impact on performance?(1)
Subroutines break down
How can concentration negatively impact on performance?(2)
Not focused in training
Analyse the positive impact of concentration on performance (2 marks)
Able to block out external distractions
- Such as crowd
- Keep head in the game
- Skill level remains high
- Remain on task
- Go through with tactics
Focused on the movement of the game
- Autonomous
- Focused on movements of players and ball
- Able to make the best choice for situation
- Focused on own players to see who should take the ball
Analyse the negative impact of concentration of performance(2 marks)
Subroutines break down
- Not focused on the breakdown of the skill
- May miss out vital steps in the skill
- Skill not performed to best ability
- Example: Overhead clear, miss the step through, less power in shot
Not focused in training
- May be off task
- Don’t put in 100%
- Plateau at the level
- Miss vital pieces of information, so not able to perform the skill correctly
- Don’t pay attention to feedback, no improvements
What is the method of data collection for concentration?
Concentration questionnare
How many questions does the concentration questionnaire have?
17
What are the four responses to the concentration questionnaire?
Always
Mostly
Sometimes
Rarely
Give an example question from the concentration questionnaire
‘Knowing the score during the game’
Describe the concentration questionnaire (4 marks)
- Related to perception of performance in badminton
- 17 questions
- 68 Max score
- ‘Knowing the score during the game’
- Four responses relating to a number(Always,Mostly,Sometimes,Rarely)
- Space for retesting after development
- Done before a development program/performance
Give an example score and the category you would be placed in for the concentration questionnaire
17-30 low
34-50 inconsistent
51-68 high
What is the message given when you score between 34 and 50?
Your level of concentration is inconsistent. You may lack focus in specific areas of your performance.
Give two benefits of the concentration questionnaire
Permanent Record
Able to identify specific focuses to target
Give two limitations of the concentration questionnaire
Performer may be biased
Importance of Timing
What is the approach to develop concentration?
Controlled Breathing
Describe ‘Controlled breathing’ as an approach to develop concentration
- Process by which you slow down your breathing
- Performed between gaps in performance
- Inhale, hold breath, exhale and repeat
- Repeat about 10 times
- Have to be standing up, sitting up or lying down
- Improves focus and gives performer new energy
- Triggers body relaxation response
What are the steps in controlled breathing?
Inhale
Hold breath
Exhale
State two advantages of controlled breathing
Triggers body relaxation response
Allows refocusing
State two disadvantages of controlled breathing
Time Consuming
Hard to carry out in full game context
What is an advantage of the controlled breathing allowing the performer to refocus?
- Brings focus back to the game and allows player to re concentrate on performance
- Helps the performer avoid distractions
- Optimizing performance
How is the fact that controlled breathing is time consuming a disadvantage?
- No time to fully carry it out
- Decrease number of repetitions
- Not as effective and does not have desired effect
- May not want to do it again because believe it doesn’t have effect
