Communication and Interaction Flashcards
Sunshine Laws
require meetings and decisions of regulatory authorities be public
planners need to consult state and local regultions
Design Charrettee
bring together citizens, stakeholders, staff to develop detailed design plan for specific area
held over one or more days
effective for quickly developing consensus
small groups formed, each group focus on design solution with facilitator
Delphi Method
intent of coming to consensus
panel of selected, informed citizens complete questionnaires
after each round of questioning, feedback is presented anonymously
particpants are encouraged tor revise answers based on replies heard
Nominal Group Technique
problem identification, solution generation, decision making
used for groups of any size that want to come to decision by vote
every group member shares ideas briefly, list of ideas created
solutions are ranked, rankings discussed, solution with highest rank selected
Facilitation
uses person without direct stake in outcome of a meeting to help groups that disagree work together to solve complex problems

brainstorming
informal approach, initial stages in project to determine goals
small internal group setting
coffee klatch
informal gathering at a neighbours house
planning cell
randomly selected group of participants who collaborate on developing solutions to a given issue
what are the three community engagement evaluation design options
process, outcome and impact evaluation
process evaluation
collecting data in planning and implementation phases (frequency and content of meetings, inclusiveness of process)
done at beginning and throughout engagement process
outcome evaluation
assesses change resulting from community engagement
evaluation might involve individual or community level changes
conducted at end of engagement process
to what extent are people in community engaged?
impact evaluation
seeks to establish evidence of causality
requires random assignment of participants and use of an intervention group and control group
challenging to implement, costly, need long standing engagement program, lot of data collected, previous evaluations,
to what extent can community change be attributed to community engagement?
ripple effect mapping
method used in evaluation to engage key stakeholders in assessing impact of community engagement
participants look back over a period of time and create a visual map of direct or indirect impacts of community engagement
