Stimulation that promotes communication
Vocabulary
Using spoken or written words, be conscious to not use medical jargon to untrained ears
Denotative and connotative meaning
Many words can have different meanings and understanding, be careful how you say things and approach patients
Pacing
Conversations are more successful at am appropriate speed or pace
Intonation
Tone of voice can dramatically affect the meaning of a message
Clarity and brevity
Communication is effective when it is simple brief and direct.
“Where is your pain” is better than “I would like for you to describe for me the location of your discomfort”
Personal appearance
Includes physical characteristics, facial expression, and dress and grooming.
Posture and gait
Yes! Even how you carry yourself matters
Eye contact
People usually see eye contact as a readiness to communicate and respect, however be aware that in some cultures eye contact can bring disrespect
Territory and personal space
Nurses need to convey confidence, gentleness, and respect for privacy, especially actions that require intimate contact or involve a patients vulnerable zone.
Intimate zone
0-18 inches

Always best to use an interpreter, not best idea to use family
Ways to promote therapeutic communication
- Don’t multitask while patient is talking
- Actively listen don’t just sit there
- Demonstrate your presence by being in the moment
- use social conversation
- observe, ask, disclose things about you(carefully)
Therapeutic communication techniques
- ask open ended questions
- provide information(don’t keep the patients information only to yourself and not to them)

Therapeutic communication techniques are specific responses that encourage the expression feeling and ideas and convey acceptance and learning
Sympathy
Concern, sorrow, or pity felt by the nurse for the patient.
“ I’m so sorry to hear about your mastectomy, it must be terrible to lose a breast”
Empathy
The ability to understand and accept another persons reality, accurately perceive feelings, and communicate this understanding to the other.
