What are the signs of neonatal hypoglycaemia?
lethargy
reluctance to feed
jitteriness
seizure activity
What are the risk actors for hypoglycaemia?
diabetic mum certain drugs e.g. beta blockers infection hypothermia small, premature
How is hypoglycaemia treated?
keep baby warm, minimal handling, early feed
reduce stressors in environment
at least 3 hourly feeds - bottle, cup/syringe, NG
may need NICU
What can cause acute respiratory stress in a neonate?
transient tachypnoea of the newborn resp distress syndrome infection, sepsis pneumonia pneumothorax
What can cause chronic respiratory stress in a neonate?
metabolic - acidosis, hypoglycaemia haem - polycythaemia, anaemia, blood loss cardio - PPHN, congenital heart disease neuro - seziures, intracranial bleed congenital lunch malformation
What is the treatment of respiratory distress in a neonate?
suction airway opening manoeuvres CXR CBG resp support - CPAP, intubation, ventilation
When is jaundice pathological?
<24 hours
> 2 weeks
What can cause jaundice <24hours?
haemolytic disease of the newborn
infection
G6PD deficiency
How is physiological jaundice treated?
phototherapy
side effects - eye damage (wear lil sunglasses), rash (bile salts in skin), dehydration
What drug do you give a baby suffering from withdrawal from opiates?
oromorph
What drug do you give a baby suffering from withdrawal from CNS depressants e.g. benzos, alcohol
phenobarbital
