Common Factor Skills Flashcards
Introduction
Common factor skills
-therapeutic alliance
Paragraph 1
TR important for effectiveness of treatment
- LICBT -focus on engaging clients with self-help materials supporting them
- > Collaborative engagement -Beitman et al (1989) personal qualities
- > Within the materials (Bennett-Levy et al 2010a) between P C and M
- > Gilbert and Leahy (2007) - dance coach
Paragraph 1 (e)
e-still facilitates change and engagement
e- beck et al 1979 - not sufficient in change but is necessary
e-Rogers et al 1951 -enough to offer facilitation conditions
Paragraph 2
Empathy -Bennett-Levy et al 2003
->encompasses warmth and genuineness (papworth and marrinan 2018)
->should be attuned to client, if not client feels little understanding (Thwaites and Bennett-Levy 2007) thus relationship diminishes decreasing effectiveness of therapy
- > should consider interpersonal qualities of self-help materials
- Richardson et al 2010 -Possible to relate and show understanding through them, little = low engagement
- Richards and Farrand (2010) - empathetic approach to selecting self-help
- requires practitioner to have knowledge and understanding
- Practitioners using CBT = high empathy for clients (Thwaites et al 2014) - > Empathetic communication -summaries, reflections and clarifications
- without these clients have little access and focus
- without these practitioners have little understanding
- Thwaites and Bennett-levy 2007 -indicates efforts to ‘tune in’
- facilitates collab ->trying to work with them
- assuming understanding =counterproductive to collab -> telling client what they are thinking
Paragraph 3
LICBT Group based interventions
shorter sessions
mode of delivery
use of materials
these leave less chance for empathy
e- farrad and woodford (2013)
e-waller et al (2009)
-mode of delivery -telephone -less non-verbal empathy
e-can show through tone Lovell (2010) -info =TR
e- factors effecting ability to tune in /empathy -out of control of P
-> self-awareness
-> looking after own wellbeing
-> regular reflections (Haarhaff and Thwaites, 2016)
e-can be difficult to find time but worthy investment (thwaites et al (2015)
Conclusion
- limitations of LICBT that decrease TR
- BUT; Empathy can improve engagement -reducing neg effects
- thus encouraging engagement and higher effectiveness
