When do you use comerse?
When talking about quantity or specific food. It shows emphasis as well. You will use it when wanting to say you “ate up” something entirely.
Laura se come las uñas.
Laura eats her nails.
Te comiste todo el pastel?
Did you eat all the cake?
Cómanse sus verduras.
Eat your vegetables.
My dog ate my homework.
Mi perro se comió la tarea.

When to use Comer?
Comer to describe how we eat (fast, low, a lot, a little) and to explain eating habits.
The use of comerse is optional. That means, that, in Spanish, we can use comer in all the cases where the usage of comerse is also allowed.
Therefore, the usage of comer is always correct (when speaking generally, when referring to specific quantity, etc.)
La bebé come muy bien.
The baby eats very well.
You should eat fruits and vegetables.
Debes comer frutas y verduras.
I’m full because I ate a lot.
Estoy llena porque comí mucho.
Yesterday we ate a lot of pizza and pasta.
Ayer comimos mucha pizza y pasta.
We are not saying we ate up the whole pizza and pasta.

“un” needs to be there because we are talking about specifics with Comer
