COM S1 Flashcards
Identify the role of receptors in detecting stimuli
Cells of the nervous system not all same some have role of detecting changes in the environment
Name the receptors…
skin, taste, smell, photo receptors, mechanoreceptors, thermoreceptors, chemoreceptors
Skins role as a receptor?
pressure, pain, heat & cold receptors
Taste role as a receptor?
salty, sour, sweet, bitter, umami
Smell role as a receptor?
Approx. 1000 different receptors that detect over 10000 different odours
Photoreceptors role as a receptor?
eye > detect light
Mechanoreceptors role as a receptor?
ear . vibrate in response to sound waves, skin . detect pressure and touch
Thermoreceptors role as a receptor?
skin > detect warmth and cold
Chemoreceptors role as a receptor?
nose and tongue > detect odours and tastes
What does the response to a stimulus involve?
Essential for survival > we need to pick up information from environment > interpret it
> React appropriately
STIMULUS > RECEPTOR > MESSENGER > EFFECTOR > RESPONSE
Whats the stimulus?
provoked by change in internal or external environment
Whats the receptor?
detects stimulus
Each sensor receptor > responsible for particular stimulus
Whats the messenger?
receptors that change energy of stimulus > into energy used to start nerve impulse > Nerve impulse = messenger
What’s the effector?
Organ that receives message > carries out response
Whats a response?
whats carried out
identify the range of senses involved in communication.
visual (sight), olfactory (smell), Auditory (hearing), Tactile (touch), taste, other senses.
Give a description of Sight.
- Communication by colour
- Pattern of plumage
- Posture
- Body movement
- Facial expression used to signal breeding times, threat, defend territory
Give a description of Smell
- Communication by chemical signals
- Scent marking of boundaries and territories
- To search for and identify food and water
- Species and sex recognition
- Detect and avoid harmful substances
Give a description of Hearing
- Communication by sound
- Used to defend territory
- Alert others of danger
- Used in breeding
- Bird song helps females find males of same species
Give a description of Touch
- Avoiding obstacles
- Fighting
- Defence mechanisms
- Friendship behaviour and copulation
- Animals use to attract others
Give a description of Taste
• Bees and blowflies have taste receptors on feet that help locate food
Give a description of Other senses.
- Senses to detect electric fields
- Magnetic fields
- Polarised light
- Gravity
