How did the ussr take control of Poland
Invaded it in 1947. Destroyed to polish home army (anti communist resistance). However they did not seize power straight away.
In July they set up a committee of national liberation ( which undermined the polish government )
This role was to comflague the extent of communist control in the wide society.
Used to reassure the west and USA that they were not intending of making Poland communist.
What did the Hungarians do to stop the soviets invading
1943 - Hungarians attempted to sign an armistice with Britain to be spared to the occupation by soviets troops.
But with the decision not to open up second front in Balkans ensured that their fate will be decided by the red army.
1944 September - appealed to the soviets to ceasefire but Germany encouraged the Hungarian fascists to seize power in Hungary.
How did soviets take control of Hungary
December 1944- red army reached outskirts of Budapest.
Communist party was to weak to play a dominant role in politics
In 1945 only gained 17 / but given three key provisional roles in national government.
1945- aim to strip Hungary of resources for reperations not sure whether tho make it a bloc country or a bridge between East and west.
Why were Romania and Bulgaria important for user
Both states were vital security of ussr
Romania would open up land routes in Yugoslavia
Bulgaria would ape able to strengthen position in Black Sea also gives them. A base to dominate Turkish straits and Greek frontier.
How did the ussr take control of Romania
Russia determined to re- annex territories of besserbia and northern burkovina in 1940
On 23 August king disposed nazi dictator supported liber,, non socialist, who hoped would ceasefire with western allies to form. Gov where coms would be a small minority’s.
However king had no choice but to sign a armistice with soviets on 12th September
Government of communist, liberals and socialist formed a coalition.
The national democratic front 1944 seized farms from land owners and workers to set up communist dominated production committee.
How did ussr take over Bulgaria
Take over of Romania allowed in the first week o September to take over Bulgaria.
Local communist with army of 100,000 partisans formed a patriotic front with social democrats, agrarians (farmers) and ant royalist officers.
They then set up government in Sofia
Causing communist revolution.
Took over trade unions and police were infiltrated and famrers taken over by peasant co-operatives
These things did not fit in with statins aims
Wanted safe guard soviet control over Bulgaria
Wanted Bulgarian to follow a more moderate policy.
Were determined to get complete power regardless of the consequences
