Cognitive Psych Lecture 9 Representation of Knowledge Flashcards
What are the different types of Knowledge?
Procedural, declarative, episodic, semantic
What is procedural knowledge?
- Knowledge about HOW WE DO SOMETHING steps and processes (how we solve a puzzle)
- Knowledge that is acquired through REPEATED PRACTICE and exposure
3.Once it is acquired it is HARD TO GET RID OF that knowledge (extinguish)
What is declarative knowledge?
- Knowledge about FACTS AND EVENTS
- Knowledge that is acquired through ORGANIZATION
- EASILY FORGOTTEN - Not as permanent or as stable as procedural knowledge
Declarative knowledge is split up into what 2 categories of memory/knowledge?
Episodic and semantic
What is episodic memory/ knowledge?
- Autobiographical: Knowledge about things which YOU have experienced - based on your own experiences
- Temporal tags - These memories have some type of time tag to them REMEMBER WHEN THINGS HAPPEN (remember when you bought your first car, have a general time of that)
What is semantic memory/ knowledge?
- Factual memory - memory which you have picked up in many ways (memory for words, memory for concepts)
- Although you may have learned things at a certain time, they are not explicitly linked to your own experience of having learned it
Is semantic memory for the most part permanent?
Yes
What areas of the brain are more active with semantic memory?
lateral temporal lobes, posterior prefrontal cortex
What areas of the brain are more active with episodic memory?
hippocampus and anterior prefrontal cortex
Is semantic memory highly organized or unorganized?
Organized
