cognition: language Flashcards
phonomes
basic sounds- babies can produce all even if not home lang.
morpheme
sounds that add meaning (s=plural, un=not)
syntax
order of words in a sentence
semantics
word meaning
surface structure vs deep structure
surface: rules about language (grammar)
deep: context and structure
child’s process for acquiring language
babbling-> first word -> two word stage -> telegraph speech (only nouns and verbs)
overextension vs over-regularization/generalization
overextension: using a word for more than it typically means (all animals=cat)
overgeneralization: applying grammatical rules to all cases (runned)
Chomsky’s Language Acquisition Device
Device in brains that allows for creation for language. Believed babies have innate ability to produce all sounds, but during their critical periods they only keep some of them.
Behaviorist theory of language
Skinner believed language was learned through operant conditioning, and the reward was people understanding what you want
Linguistic determinism
we can only think about what we talk about- our language affects our perceptions and thinking (spanish has gendered nouns, english does not)
aphasia
impaired use of language
