What is the care plan for performing catheter care to a female resident?
Provide catheter care with soap and water to a female resident, clean the catheter tubing and perineal area
What are the supplies needed?
I. Barrier II. Bath basin III. 4 washcloths IV. Towel V. Soap VI. Gloves VII. Privacy blanket VIII. Underpad
What should you tell the patient prior to providing the cleaning care?
Let patient know you will now be cleaning the catheter and you need to roll their gown up for a brief moment and to let you know if they ever feel uncomfortable at any point
What do you use the first washcloth for?
Use first washcloth and apply soap to 4 corners, hold catheter where it exits the body and wipe around the catheter going away from the body, use each soaped corner to complete this action four times
What do you use the second washcloth for?
Use second washcloth and apply soap to 5 corners, hold catheter out of the way while you clean down the center going top to bottom, another corner to clean one outside top to bottom, another corner to clean another outside top to bottom, use fourth corner to clean one leg crease top to bottom and last corner to clean other crease top to bottom
What do you use the third washcloth for?
Use third washcloth to rinse all areas
What must you check about the catheter once completing the cleaning?
Make sure the catheter is not on the ground, not tangled and not laid on
