  • foul discharge, tissue necrosis, toxemia, shock, death
  • food poisoning if ingested and not infect

  • extracellular enzyme secretions destroy tissue and allow invasion by vegetative cells
  • alpha toxin: a lecithinase
  • hyaluronidase, collagenase
  • beta toxin
  • some produce enterotoxin
