Clinical skills Flashcards
How would you administer oxygen to a 27 year old male who is critically ill after being in a major trauma?
Non-rebreather mask
O2 turned to 15L/min
FIO2 60-80%
What SaO2 range is normal in a healthy individual?
94-100%
What SaO2 range is normal in someone with type II respiratory failure? (eg. COPD)
88-92%
When should Oxygen therapy be used?
If the patient is showing signs of hypoxia
SaO2 lower than expected value
What device is used to measure SaO2?
A pulse oximeter
Nail polish, severe anaemia and CO poisoning can impair which result?
SaO2
If a patient has a low oxygen need, which device should be used and how?
A nasal canula
at 2-6L/min
FIO2 of 24-50%
Which method of oxygen delivery would be used for a patient with COPD?
A venturi mask
At flow/FIO2 stated on mask
When would a Hudson face mask at 5-10L/min usually be used?
In a post-operative patient for a short period of time
What is nebulising?
Delivering liquid drugs in aerosol vapour form directly to the lungs/pulmonary system
what is palmar erythema?
symmetrical redness on palms of hands, indicates hyperdynamic circulation, and is a symptom in many respiratory diseases
what is cyanosis?
blue colouring of extremities/lips/tounge- indicates hypoxia
