classification of structures Flashcards
what is a giant ionic lattice
sodium chloride (salt)
of is giant ionic lattice made of
positive sodium ions and negative chloride ions and is held together by very strong ionic bonds
whats the properties of ionic compounds
high MP and BP - a lot of energy is needed to break the ionic bonds
solubility - soluble in water
electrical conductivity - will not conduct when solid,, will conduct when
molten or dissolved in water
whats the examples of molecular covalant structures
oxygen ammonia water
explain the molecular covalent structures
the covalent bond is strong but the forces holding them together are very weak (waals forces)
whats the properites of molecular covalent structures
very low MP and BP - little energy is needed to break waal force
poor conductor - no charged particles to move and carry the charge
not soluble in water
whats the observations for a positive test on chlorine
turns red then bleaches aka turns to white
