chromography Flashcards
whats chromatography used for
to separate mixtures of soluble substances in a solution
eg inks dyes and colouring agents
whats the method
use a pencil and draw the baseline on the chromatography paper
use a capillary tube place a spot of the substance
place the paper in a beakeer with solvent
the solvent travels up the paper
when the solvent travled up mark up the solvent front
leave the paper to dry
what will a pure substance produce do on the paper
what about mixtures
it will produce a single spot in chromatography
mixtures will produce more than one spot
whats the stationary phase
is the paper
whats the mobile phase
the solvent
–mobile means changes—
how do you work out the rf value
distance moved by the substance / distance moved by the solvent
if the substance is closet to the solvent front what does that mean
its the most soluble
