Q

How is a culture of ethical conduct in the business established?

A

The first step is to select and recruit people that will act in an ethical manner.

Management must set the example and at all times act ethically - in their professional and personal lives. It is called value-based leadership!

There should be formal policies and ethical codes developed and employees must regularly be reminded of expected behaviour โ€“ through formal training sessions, as well as through informal conversations and stories that employees share among themselves.

Q

What is the difference between ethical and legal?

A

Something may be legal but not ethical in a certain e.g. it is not illegal to sell basic goods such as bread and medicine at a high price because we live in a free market economy. But what if the business exploits the poor in the process while making excessive profits?

On the other hand: Is everything that is illegal also unethical? What if a business sells petrol at a price below the fixed price, as determined by the Government stipulations, and in the process it helps consumers?

Q

What is onsidered unethical behaviour when a business markets products / services?

A

Materialism, where false needs are created, like a business that advertises liquor to rehabilitated alcoholics.

Giving deceptive names to products, e.g. call a pizza a โ€œSlimming Mealโ€:

When the business tries to deceive the customer by selling second-hand goods as new goods.

Any competing advertisements are illegal (and thus unethical) in South Africa.

The use of unacceptable language discriminating against the disabled, gender bias or by being racist is unethical as it is considered โ€œcultural pollutionโ€. No form of discrimination is acceptable when products/services are advertised or promoted.
