Cirrhosis Flashcards
what is cirrhosis
Chronic degenerative disease of the liver
What occurs in cirrhosis
Lobes are covered with fibrous tissue, parenchyma degenerates and lobules are infiltrated with fat
what is micronodular cirrhosis a result of?
alcohol abuse
What is micronodular cirrhosis a result of?
Viral hepatitis or infection
what are essential features of cirrhosis?
Essential feature is simultaneous parenchymal necrosis, regeneration, and diffuse fibrosis, resulting in a disorganization of lobular architecture.
what are three classic cirrhosis symptoms
Hepatomegaly, jaundice, ascites
What are symptoms of acute cirrhosis
Asymptomatic or
Nausea, flatulence, ascites, light coloured stool, weakness, abdominal pain, varicosities, spider angiomas
what are symptoms of chronic cirrhosis
Nausea, anorexia, weight loss, jaundice, dark urine, fatigue, varicosities
Lab tests associated with cirrhosis
Increased ALK phos · Increased Direct Bilirubin · Increased AST · Increased ALT · Increased Leukopenia
what is the first sonographic finding of cirrhosis
Hepatomegaly (Enlarged liver)
As cirrhosis increases, liver volume _______in the right lobe and _________ and ______ enlarges
Right lobe, left lobe, caudate lobe
what test can indicate of cirrhosis
Ratio of caudate lobe width to the right lobe width can be used to indicate cirrhosis (C/RL value of 0.65 is indicative of cirrhosis)
Is echogenicity decreased or increased?
Increased echogenicity and coarsening of the hepatic parenchyma secondary to fibrosis and surface nodularity
There is _________attenuation
Increased
there is __________vascular markings
Decreased
