what is an amebic abscess
Collection of pus formed by disintegrated tissue in a cavity (usually in the liver)
what is an amebic abscess caused by?
Protozoan parasite, Entamoeba histolyica
how do parasites reach the liver parenchyma
Portal vein
what are the symptoms of amebic abscess
Asymptomatic or GI symptoms
abdominal pain, diarrhea, low fever, leukocyosis
where does this parasite most commonly affect
colon and cecum
Amebiasis
contracted by ingesting the protozoan parasite in contaminated food and water
what is the appearance of an amebic abscess
Usually complex (usually in the right lobe)
what can the appearance of an amebic abscess be
Variable and non-specific
what does an amebic abscess lack
Well defined walls
abscess is usually
hypoechoic and contains low level echoes
an amebic abscess contains what
Internal debris
what is found beyond the mass
Distal enhancement beyond the mass lesion
