Circulatory system lesson 2 Flashcards
what is blood pressure
the force of blood on the walls of the arteries
what is blood pressure measured with
sphygmomanometer
what is Systolic pressure
when the ventricles contract
what is Diastolic pressure
when the ventricles relax
what unit is used to measure blood pressure
mm of Hg
cause and what happens when a drop in blood pressure occurs
Blood pressure & velocity both decline as blood enters the arterioles.
The drop in pressure results from the resistance (friction) to blood flow.
what happens in the systole
During systole, the heart contracts, pumping blood out of the chambers into the arteries, facilitating circulation throughout the body.
what happens in the diastole
During diastole, the heart relaxes, allowing the chambers to fill with blood as it returns from the body and lungs, preparing for the next contraction.
what is a Electrocardiograph
a device that detects the electrical activity of the heart through electrodes placed on the body’s surface.
what is a Electrocardiogram
a record of electrical impulses generated by a beating heart
what increases the chance of getting a cardiovascular disease
High levels of cholesterol in blood
Smoking
Diabetes mellitus
High blood pressure
Lack of regular exercise
Rapid weight gain or loss
Genetics
what is hypertension
Increased resistance in blood flow leads to sustained levels of high blood pressure. Symptoms not known until situation is serious
what is Angioplasty
involves opening up blocked arteries by inflating a small balloon to widen the artery and a stent is put in place.
what is Bypass surgery
a surgical procedure in which an artery is grafted to blocked artery to reroute blood flow and oxygen to the heart
what is Myocardial Infarction
a frequent consequence of CAD. It is death of an area of heart muscle tissue due to oxygen deprivation.
