Circulatory System Flashcards
What are the great vessels?
the ones directly connected to the heart
Arterioles are slightly narrowed compared to their maximum internal diameter due to continuous conduction of action potentials to arterioles by sympathetic nerves.
What does this describe?
sympathetic tone to arterioles
An increase in sympathetic tone causes..?
more vasoconstriction
A decrease in sympathetic tone causes..?
more vasodilation
The coronary arteries arise from which part of the aorta?
ascending aorta
Name the 3 branches (in order) arising from the arch of the aorta?
- brachiocephalic trunk ( which divides into right common carotid and right subclavian artery)
- left common carotid artery
- left subclavian artery
Name the 5 arteries arising from the thoracic aorta?
- intercostal
- bronchial
- mediastinal
- oesophageal
- phrenic
There are 4 parts of the aorta..what are they?
ascending
arch
thoracic
abdominal
When the 2 vertebral arteries join together , which artery do they form?
the basilar artery
What are anastomoses?
When arteries connect with each other without a capillary network. e..g circle of willis
What arteries supply the pelvis/perineum and lower limbs?
the right and left common iliac arteries.
these bifurcate into the internal iliac which supplies the pelvis and perineum and the external iliac which supplies the lower limbs
Which pulse do you feel for at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery?
carotid pulse
Where do you feel for the femoral pulse?
at the continuation of the external iliac artery
Which pulse can you find in the back of the knee in the popliteal fossa?
popliteal pulse
What makes up the circulatory system?
cardiovascular system and lymphatic system
