circulatory system Flashcards
blood function
-carries nutrients and oxygen to cells.
-remove waste from cells.
-helps control body temp.
-fight infection.
HAS:
-plasma
-blood cells
-platelets
plasma
-the liquid of blood.
-55% of the volume of blood.
-92% water
THREE PROTEINS:
albumins- keep water from leaving body
fibrinogen- used for blood clotting
globulins- transport proteins; some are antibodies…help destroy bad things in body
Red blood cells
-called “Erythrocytes”
-no nuclei
-created by bone marrow
-live 120 days (die and we want them to so they make new ones
-double concave shape (flow better)
-contain HEMOGLOBIN
hemoglobin
-protein found in the blood
-made up of iron (makes blood red color)
-carries oxygen to cells and removes carbon
function of red blood cells
-transport oxygen to cells from the lungs
-transport carbon dioxide to the lungs from the cells
white blood cells
-called “luekocytes”
-larger than RBC
-have nucleus (control themselves)
-FIGHT
INFECTION (MACROPHAGE)
red marrow
-creation of red blood cells , platelets and most white blood cells
type of white bc: MACROPHAGES
protect the body by engulfing and digesting foreign invaders (garbage disposal)
type of white bc: LYMPHOCYTES
produce antibodies
-T cells: participates in immune response
-B cells: produces antibodies
platelets
-BLOOD CLOTTING
-small pieces of cells found in blood
-no nuclei
-live 7 days
-homeostasis: blood clotting
gene expression leads to:
cell differentiation
-ability of one cell to become many types.
lymphatic system
-fluid system
-all waste in the body goes to lymph nodes
-all bad waste goes to lymph nodes and we fight it off with WBCs.
Lymph (liquid)
-fluid containing water, proteins and intracellular fluid
-coats individual cells
-helps materials (waste, helpful and harmful) move from blood to cells back to blood.
Lymph nodes
-small glands that filter foreign matter from the lymph
-contain white blood cells (fight off infection)
-all waste comes here
intercellular fluid
fluid that is usually squeezed out of a capillary during normal cell activities
-helps move materials between the cells and capillaries
spleen
-organ near the stomach that contains lymph tissue
-filters out bacteria and worn out RBCs from blood
thymus gland
trains and prepares new WBCs
-help clean up what needs cleaning.
what type of tissue is lymph nodes
Reticuloendothelial (connective tissue)
vagus nerve
homeostasis
-slows the heart rate when needed
medulla oblengata
fight or flight
sends signal to the SA node
intercalated discs
cellular junction to allow electrochemical impulses to be conveyed across tissues
aspirin
thins blood
glycerin
opens up arteries
myocardial infarction
starved cells start to die (heart attack no blood)
angioplasty
inflates artery with balloon
arteries
carry blood AWAY from the heart to body -high pressure
capillaries
-simple squamous tissue
-supply all cells with their requirements
-take away waste products
veins
carry blood to the heart from the body DEOXY
prevent backflow
