Chronic Inflammation Flashcards
List the cell types involved in chronic inflammation
Lymphocytes
Macrophages
Plasma cells
Fibroblasts
List the major causes of chronic inflammation
Arising from acute inflammation:
Arising as a primary lesion
How does chronic inflammation arise from acute inflammation?
- Large volume of damage
- Inability to remove debris
- Fails to resolve
How does chronic inflammation arise as a primary lesion?
-No acute phase
-Can be a result of
>AUTOIMMUNAL DISEASE eg autoantibodies are directed against own auto antigens. Example- thyroiditis, rheumatoid disease
>MATERIAL RESISTANT TO DIGESTION eg mycobacteria, viruses
>EXOGENOUS SUBSTANCES eg sutures, glass
>ENDOGENOUS SUBSTANCES eg keratin, hair, necrotic tissue
Describe the effects of chronic inflammation
- Scarring and fibrosis
- Granuloma formation
What are the adverse effects of chronic inflammation
- ongoing tissue or organ damage
- incidious loss of function
What are the roles of macrophages?
Take over from neutrophils and remove debris.
Main antigen-presenting cells
Contains enzymes and product interferons and other chemicals which destroy the process
