AM- Spectrum of Commonly used agents Flashcards
1
Q
What are commonly used B-lactam antibiotic agents?
A
Penicillins
Cephalosporins
Glycopeptides EG vancomycin
Carbapanems
2
Q
What are aminoglycosides commonly used for?
A
- Action against gram-negative organisms including pseudomonas (lung infections)
- parenteral use only
- Gentamicin is the cheapest and most commonly used
3
Q
How does aminoglycosides and macrolides work?
A
Inhibition of protein synthesis
4
Q
how does b-lactam antibiotic works?
A
Disrupt peptidoglycan synthesis by inhibiting the enzymes (penicillin-binding proteins PBPs) responsible for cross linking the carbohydrate chains
5
Q
What are macrolides antibiotics used for?
A
- Includes Clarithromycin, azithromycin, erythromycin activity is mainly against Gram-positive organisms
- Used as an alternative to penicillin
6
Q
What are quinolone antibiotics used for?
A
wide spectrum of actin which are active against nearly all gram negative organisms including pseudomonas
7
Q
What are other antibiotics used?
A
- Triomethoprim
- Tetracyclines (inhibiting protein synthesis)
- Linezolid and Daptomycin
