Chemistry Flashcards
What is an element?
Elements make up all matter
What is the smallest part of an element?
An atom
How many elements are in the human body?
20
What are the most common elements of the human body?
Oxygen (65%)
Carbon (18.5%)
Hydrogen (9.5%)
Nitrogen (3.3%)
What makes up an atom?
An atom consists of protons, nuetrons and electrons
Protons
Have a positive charge and found in the nucleus
Electrons
Have a negetive charge and found in the electron orbiting shell
Neutrons
Have a neutral charge and found in the nucleus
What is an atomic number?
The number of protons in the atom
Octet Rule
Where an atom wants 8 electrons in its outer shell to make it happy/stable.
What is a bond?
When elements combine with other elements to make compounds or molecules.
How can an atom get to a stable state?
By gaining, loosing or sharing electrons
What is a chemical bond?
Is a force or attraction between positive and negetive charges that keep two atoms closely associated with each other to form a molecule
What is an Ionic Bonds?
The loss of one or more electrons by one atom and a gain of electrons by another atom
What is an ion?
When an atom looses or gains one or more electron and the charge changes the number or protons and electrons
