Cells Flashcards
What are the two classes of cells?
- Sex cells
* Somatic - every other type of cell
How do you describe the two regions of the cell?
Intracellular and Extracellular
What are the three main components that make up a cell?
- Nucleus
- Plasma membrane
- Cytoplasm
What is the fluid within the cell called?
Cytosol
What is made up of dissolved ions and nutrients, proteins and waste products?
Cytosol
What is the function of Cytosol?
It is where most of the chemical reactions occur in the cell
What is the function of the plasma membrane?
It is a physical barrier between the intracellular and extracellular environment and regulates the exchange of substances.
What are structures in the cell that are suspended in cytosol?
Organelles
What is the powerhouse of the cell?
Mitochondrion
What does the smooth endoplasmic reticulum do?
Produces fats and steroid hormones. It appears smooth as it doesnt contain and ribosomes
What are the function of ribosomes?
they make protein.
What does the golgi apparatus do?
Modifies, sorts and packages proteins ready for secretion
What does the rough endoplasmic reticulum do?
runs quality- control and dispatches the proteins. It appears to be rough as it is studded with ribosomes.
What are the function of peroxisomes?
break down fatty acids
What is the function of the secretory vesicles?
they store molecules and proteins produced by the endoplasmic reticular and golgi apparatus, until they are ready to be released by the cell.
