Characteristics Of Living Organisms Flashcards
Movement
Change of shape or position
Respiration
They can create chemical reactions that break down nutrients to give energy
Sensitivity
They can sense/detect stimuli and respond to them
Growth
They can permanently increase their size or dry mass
Reproduction
Organisms reproduce to make new individuals
Excretion
Production and removal of toxic waste materials as a result of metabolism
Nutrition
Obtaining nutrients for energy to allow growth and repair
Homeostasis
They can control their internal condition
Eg temp or water content
How do respiration produce ATP
During aerobic respiration, glucose reacts with oxygen forming ATP
Difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration - take in place in the presence of oxygen
Anaerobic respiration - does not need oxygen
Aerobic respiration equation
Glucose + oxygen - carbon dioxide + water
Anaerobic respiration equation
Exercise
Glucose - lactic acid(+ATP)
Describe anaerobic respiration
Glucose is not completely broken down
Build up of lactic acid
Lactic acid needs to be oxidised
Causes oxygen debt that needs to be repaid
Anaerobic respiration equation (plants and yeast)
Glucose - ethanol + carbon dioxide
