Communication
Exchange of ideas or information that happens in a culturally influenced communication environment- one must understand the cultural frame of the speaker to fully understand the meaning intended
Culture
Provides a frame or schema for living within a specific group of people, can very (degree of interdependence, gender roles, etc…)
Collectivism
Collectivism is a value that is characterized by emphasis on cohesiveness among individuals and prioritization of the group over the self
Individualism
A social theory favoring freedom of action for individuals over collective
Cultural Identity
Refers to the way one’s culture of birth influences a persons beliefs and self concept
Significance for interpreters
Interpreters must be able to identify cross-cultural dynamics that influence interactions
Components of culture
“A complex whole, including knowledge, beliefs, art, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits required by the member of the culture”
Cultural Sense of Time
Different cultures value different things. Some value ‘appointments’ while others value the ‘here and now’ interaction over future things that have not yet begun
Definition of Status
Some cultures determine status in relation to family, others to jobs/ roles in the community
Collectivism vs Individualism
Collectivism
- Membership is long term and fairly rigid requirements
- Common history
- Status defined by connection to group
- Expected that social connections will be made before getting into business
Individualism
- Interpersonal contact has a lower priority
- Individual accomplishments are prized
- Tends to get right down to business
