what are the steps of policy development process?
- identify issue or problem

When may an autocratic manager be appropriate?
- time of crisis (when immediate compliance with rules or procedures is needed)
- meeting an unexpected deadline (when speed is important)

- there is little uncertainty; directions are clearly given
- time is used efficiently; because there is no discussion
what are 2 weaknesses of the autocratic management style?
- employees do not feel valued; because no employee input is allowed
- job satisfaction decreases; due to no responsibility given to lower staff = increased absenteeism
when is the persuasive management style used?
when manager wants to get employees to accept management decisions & those similar to autocratic

- some acceptance of negative situations; (eg. increased work hours) when benefits are explained
- workers believe their feelings are being considered; may approach tasks more positively
what are 2 weaknesses of the persuasive management style?
- communication is poor; limited to a top-to-bottom, one-way system
- employees become frustrated; because they aren’t involved in decision making
when is a consultative management style used?
- when a new organisational change is introduced as it provides an opportunity for employees to have some input in decision making
what are 2 strengths of the consultative management style?
- Asking for suggestions from employees allows for greater variety of ideas
- Employees have more interest in organisation; because they have more input in the way the bus is run
what are 2 disadvantages of the consultative management style?
- Time taken to consult all relevant employees can slow process
- May cause conflict/ resentment when an employees ideas are overlooked
when is the participative management style used?
when the organisational environment is undergoing rapid change because employees accept responsibility for and can implement changes. eg. brainstorming may lead to better decisions
what are 2 strengths of the participative management style?
- Job satisfaction is optimal; because employees fell they have played active role in implementing actions to meet objectives
- high levels of trust; result in improved employee performance
what are 2 weaknesses of the the participative management style?
- the role and control of management may be weakened; employees given too much power
- Internal conflict can arise with so many views and opinions being shared
when is a laissez-faire management style used?
- creative work or research, with employees who are highly talented or qualified
what are 2 strengths of the laissez-faire management style?
- employees feel sense of ownership; can promote outstanding results
- encouragement for creativity
what are 2 weaknesses of the laissez-faire management style?
- No control or direction; leads to potential for misuse of resources (time, money)
- focus on meeting organisational objectives can be easily eroded
