what is management structure? (MER)
A term used to describe the ways in which the management, employees and resources of an organisation are formally arranged in order to achieve objectives
What is a functional structure?
Involves grouping employees together according to the tasks or jobs they will perform
What is a divisional structure?
groups employees together according to divisions that may be geographical, or customer, product or process focused
What is a matrix structure?
involves bringing together specialists from different parts of the organisation to solve specific problems or to undertake specific projects in teams
What is corporate culture? (VIEB)
refers to the values, ideas, expectations and beliefs shared by members of the organisation
What is planning?
the process of setting objectives and deciding on the methods to achieve them
What is strategic planning?
long-term planning, usually over 2-5 years
What is tactical planning?
medium-term planning, usually over one to two years, which assists in implementing the strategic plan
What is operational planning?
provides specific details about the way in which the organisation will operate in the short term
What is organising?
the process of arranging resources and tasks to achieve objectives
what is leading?
the process of influencing or motivating people to work towards the achievement of the organisations objectives
What is controlling?
the process of evaluating performance and taking corrective action to ensure that the set objectives are being achieved
What is interpersonal qualities?
involves managements capacity to deal with people and build positive relationships with staff
What is informational qualities?
involves gathering and communicating or sharing data and knowledge
What is social responsibility?
the obligations a business has over and above its legal responsibilities to the wellbeing of employees, stakeholders and the environment
What is ethical management?
refers to the process of abiding by moral standards and doing the right thing in the interests of all stakeholders
What is bureaucratic structure?
a hierarchical organisation, that is task and activity entered
what is a flatter structure?
reduces the number of levels of management, more people centred
What is decision making?
identifying available options and choosing one course of action from alternatives
What is a management hierarchy?
the arrangement that provides increasing authority at higher levels of the hierarchy
What is a chain of command?
A system that determines reponsibility, supervision and accountability of members of the organisation
What is a span of control? + example
indicated the number of people for whom a manager is directly responsible
eg. one manager may be responsible for multiple supervisors
what is a unity of command?
states that each employee within an organisation should report only to one supervisor
what are heroes?
the organisations successful employees who reflect it’s values and therefore act as an example for others
what are control systems? (example)
checking procedures and products at the end of the production process. eg. making use of financial records
what is swot analysis?
Involves the identification and analysis of the internal strengths and weaknesses of the organisation, and the opportunities in, and threats from, the external environment
what is rituals, rites and celebrations? + one example
provide a sense of belonging and acknowledge what is important in the organisation eg. Friday night drinks
