What is HR planning?
The development of strategies to meet the organisation’s future human resource needs
What is job analysis?
The study of an employee’s job in order to determine the responsibilities and equipment required
What is job design?
Job design details tasks that individual employees perform in their jobs. There should be a variety of tasks to keep the employee motivated
What is recruitment?
the process of attracting qualified job applicants from which to select the most appropriate candidate
What is internal recruitment?
involves considering present employees as applicants for available positions
What is external recruitment?
involves considering a suitable applicant for a position from outside the organisation
What is discrimination?
occurs when a practice disadvantages a person/group based on a personal characteristic that is irrelevant to the performance of the work.
What is full time permanent employment?
Full time permanent employees have an ongoing contract which includes all legally required entitlements
What is part-time permanent employment?
involves working fewer hours compared with full-time employees
What is a fixed-term contract?
where employment is offered for a specific period
What is casual employment?
Casual employees are employed on an hourly basis and do not receive a range of entitlements
What is remuneration?
monetary payment in return for the work an employee performs. (made in form of wage or salary)
What is induction?
the process of acquainting new employees with the organisation and the jobs they will perform
What is training?
the process of teaching staff how to do their job more efficiently and effectively by boosting their knowledge and skills
What is development?
refers to activities that prepare staff to take on greater responsibility in the future
What is recognition and reward
acknowledges the work an employee has done and provides them some sort of benefit, such as a pay rise in return for a job well done
What are intrinsic rewards?
come from the task or job itself
What are extrinsic rewards?
Extrinsic rewards are outside the job itself
What is performance management?
focuses on improving organisational and individual performance by relating organisational performance objectives to individual employee performance objectives
What is performance appraisal?
The formal assessment of an employees individual performance in the organisation
What is performance feedback?
is the info provided to an employee after a performance appraisal
What is retirement?
Occurs when an employee decides to give up work and no longer be part of the labour force
What is resignation?
The voluntary ending of employment by the employee ‘quitting’ their job
What is redundancy?
Occurs when a person’s job no longer exists, usually due to technological changes, an organisational restructure or a merger or acquisition
What is retrenchment?
occurs when a business dismisses an employee because there is not enough work justifying paying them
What is dismissal?
Occurs when the behaviour of an employee is unacceptable and an organisation terminates their employment
What is unfair dismissal?
when an employee is dismissed because the employer has discriminated against them in some way, such as firing someone because she is pregnant
What are on-costs? plus e.g.
additional costs involved in hiring an employee, above the cost of their wages, e.g long service leave
What is the establishment phase?
The establishment phase of the employment cycle is concerned with attracting and finding a suitable applicant for a position
What is the maintenance phase?
The maintenance phase of the employment cycle is concerned with ensuring the motivation and enthusiasm of employees is held, and that employees are content with their jobs.
What is the termination phase?
The termination phase of the employment cycle is concerned with the departure of employees from the organisation
what are outplacement services?
include interview skills workshops and other services that will assist the employees in finding a new job
what are transition services?
when the organisation assists employees during their transition to being unemployed
What is the essay method?
A method of performance appraisal where the manager keeps a journal on each employee being appraised
What is the critical incident method?
A method of performance appraisal similar to essay method except that the manager records only exceptionally good or bad aspects of work performance
