What is a human resource manager?
coordinates all the activities involved in acquiring, developing, maintaining and terminating employees from organisation’s human resources
What is human resource management?
the effective management of the formal relationship between the employer and employees
What are conditions of employment?
refer to what an employer has agreed to give the employee in return for the employee’s work including what jobs are required, wages, hours and leave entitlements
What are flexible working conditions?
conditions that allow employees to balance work and family responsibilities more effectively
What is a work-life balance
about achieving the right amount of time for work and for personal or family life
What is occupational health and safety?
refers to the responsibility the employer has to ensure the workplace is safe for employees and that steps are taken to minimise harm
What is job security?
the belief that the employee will not lose their job
What is motivation?
refers to the individual, internal process that directs, energises and sustains a person’s behaviour
What is Maslow’s hierarchy of need theory?
Based on a sequence of human needs that people will seek to satisfy in the order of their importance
What is Herzberg’s motivation-hygiene theory?
the idea that satisfaction and dissatisfaction are caused by separate sets of factors
What is Locke’s goal setting theory?
the idea that employees are motivated by challenging but not overwhelming, specific and clear goals as well as appropriate feedback regarding their achievement
What is ethical management?
refers to the process of abiding by moral standards and doing the ‘right’ thing in the interests of all stakeholders
What is social responsibility?
the obligations a business has over and above its legal responsibilities to the wellbeing of employees, stakeholders, the community and the environment
What is an employer of choice?
attracts, motivates and holds on to highly talented workers
What is industrial democracy?
the move towards increasing the influence of employees in decisions affecting their organisation and their jobs
