Fingerspelling:
A manual alphabet used to spell out proper names for which no signs exist n to calify meanings
Hard of hearing
A level of hearing loss that makes it difficult, not impossible, to comprehend speech through speech alone
Hetz (HZ):
A unit of sound frequency equal to the one cycle per second. Used to measure pitch
Neural hearing impairment:
failure of the auditory nerve pathway
Operant conditioning audiometry:
A method of measuring hearing by teaching the individual to make observable response to sound.
Ossicles:
Three small bones that transmit sound energy from the middle of the ear to the inner ear.
Otitis media
inflammation of the middle ear that can cause a conductive hearing loss.
Play audiometry
A method for assessing a child’s hearing ability by teaching the child to preform simple but distinct activities. Such as picking up a ball and dropping it into a cup when he hears the signal
Post lingual hearing loss
Hearing loss occurring after the development of language.
Prelingual hearing loss:
Describes a hearing impairment acquired before the development of speech and language.
Residual hearing:
The remaining hearing, however slight, of a person who is deaf
Sensory hearing impairment
damage to the cochlea
Speech reception threshold (SRT):
A decibel at which someone can understand half of the words during a speech audiometry test.
Speechreading
A process of understanding a spoken message by observing the speaker’s lips in combination with information gained from facial expressions, gestures, and the context or situation
Total communication
An approach to education deaf students that combines oral speech, sign language and fingerspelling
