Chapter 12 Vocab and Questions Flashcards
Anoxia:
A lack of oxygen severe enough to cause tissue damage; can cause permanent brain famage and mental retardation
Closed head injury:
Caused by the head hitting a object with such force that the brain slams insides the head.
Open head injury:
Result of penetration of the skull, such as bullet or forceful blow to head with a hard or sharp object
Partial Participation:
An individual with severe disabilities may not be able to independently preform all the steps of a given task or activity. She can be taught to select components or adapted version
Task analysis:
Breaking a complex skill or chain of behaviors into small teachable parts
Time delay
1 or 2 seconds in between teaching
Traumatic brain injury
injury to the brain caused by external physical force that affects a child’s educational performance.
What kind of instruction do students with severe disabilities need that most children without disabilities already have?
They need basic instruction that other regular children obtain in the first 5 years of their lives
For students with profound disabilities, how many years of development do they usually obtain in terms of functionality?
No more than 2 years, they don’t develop functionally past 2 years of age.
For deaf-blind students can they be accommodated into special ed programs designed for hearing or visual impairments?
No they cannot. Although some students might have some hearing or vision or both, the dual impairments severely impedes learning
What are the three main categories for brain injuries?
1) Physical and sensory changes (Lack of coordination, spaz muscles)
2) Cognitive impairments (short and long term memory loss, can’t hold attention, language issues)
3) Social/behavioral/emotional problems (Mood swings, lack of motivation, self aware)
Brain disorders are involved the most in what cases?
Severe intellectual disabilities
What are the 2 reasons why one might have a brain disorder?
1) Brain dysgenesis (Abnormal brain development)
2) Brain damage (Caused by an alter in the structure or function of a brain that may have be okay before)
Can all cases of severe disabilities have their causes determined?
No, about 1/6 of all cases cannot be determined
Students with severe disabilities must be taught skills beyond basic skills and they are?
Age appropriate and directed towards current and future environments
