Acquired
A disability or condition that develops at any time after birth.
Audiogram
A form of direct observation often used as part of functional behavior assessment.
Audiometer
A device that generates sounds at specific frequencies and intensities; used to examine hearing
Audiometric Zero
The smallest sound a person with normal can perceive; also called zero hearing threshold level (HTL)
Audition
The act or sense of hearing
Auditory canal:
The part of the ear that slightly amplifies and transports sound waves from the external ear to the middle ear.
Auditory Training
A program that works on listening skills by teaching individuals with hearing impairments to make as much use as possible of their residual hearing
Auricle
The external part of the ear; collects sound waves into the auditory canal.
Behavior observation audiometry
A method of hearing assessment in which an infant’s reactions to sounds are observed
Bilingual-bicultural (bi-bi) approach
: An approach to teaching students who are deaf in which American sigh language is used as the child’s native language and English is taught as a second language. Teaching deaf culture.
Cochlea
Main receptor organ for hearing located in the inner ear.
Cochlear implant
: A surgically implanted device that convers sound from the environment into electric impulses that are sent directly to the brain via auditory nerve
Conductive hearing impairment
Hearing loss caused by obstructions in the outer or middle ear or malformations that interfere with the conduction of sound waves to the inner ear.
Congenital:
Any condition that is present at birth
Adventitious:
Any condition that is present after birth
