Muscular Dystrophy:
A group of diseases that gradually weaken muscle tissue; usually becomes evident by the age of 4-5
Myelomeningocele:
A protrusion on the back with spina bifida, sac of nerve tissue building through a cleft in the spine
Neuromotor Impairment
Any physical disability caused by damage to the central nervous system
Occupational therapists (OTs)
Professional, delivers instructional activities and materials to help children and adults with disabilities learn to participate in useful activities
Orthopedic impairment:
Impairment of the skeletal system-bones, joints, limbs, etc.
Other health impairment
Where child is covered under IDEA which a child has diseases and special health conditions such as cancer and diabetes. Affects child’s educational activities and performance.
Paraplegia:
Paralysis of the lower part of the body including both legs, usually results from injury to or disease of the spinal cord.
Quadriplegia:
Paralysis of all four limbs.
Shunt:
A tube that diverts fluid from one part of the body to another
Sickle cell disease:
An autosomal recessive disorder that affects the red blood cells’ ability to carry oxygen and leads to several complications.
Simple partial seizure:
Sudden jerking motions with no loss of consciousness. Partial seizures may occur weekly, monthly or only once or twice a year
Tay-Sachs Disease:
A progressive nervous system disorder causing profound mental retardation. Deafness, blindness, paralysis, fatal by 5 years.
Type 1 Diabetes:
Managed with diet or medication that can be difficult to control. Can cause coma even death if left untreated. No cure.
Type 2 Diabetes:
The most common. Occurs most often in adults who are overweight. Recent increase in childhood obesity.
Universal precautions:
A set of safety guidelines that interrupt the chain of infection spread by potential biohazards such as blood and bodily fluids.
