Ascribed - One that is involuntarily assigned to an individual
Acquired - One that is earned as a result of choices
Master - One that is the most dominant
Roles
Sets of beliefs, norms, attitudes and values that define a status
Role conflict vs role strain
Strain: Difficulty with requirements of multiple requirements of one role
Conflict: Difficulty with requirements of multiple roles
In vs Out Groups
In: One in which the individual feels belonging
Out: One in which the individual does not belong
Primary vs Secondary Groups
Primary: Close knit
Secondary: Not close knit
SYMLOG
System of multiple observation groups
- Dominance vs Submission
- Friendliness vs Unfriendliness
- Instrumentally controlled vs emotionally expressive.
Organization
Complex secondary group made to achieve a common goal
Self-presentation
The act of visually and behaviorally presenting oneself.
Basic Model of Emotion
Emotional expression is common among all humans and is innate. Uses facial expressions, physiological and vocal changes, behaviors, and postures.
Social Construction Model of Emotion
Emotion is a construct of socialization with others.
Display Rules
Rules which govern when/how/at what intensity emotions can be expressed.
Cultural Syndrome
Shared set of belief, norms, attitudes, values, and behaviors among members of a same culture organized around a central theme.
Impression Management
Attempts to change how others perceive us.
