Chapter 9 Quiz Questions Flashcards
What are the 3 structural classification joints?
FCS
- Fibrous joint
- Cartilaginous joint
- Synovial joint
What are the 3 types of functional joints?
- Synarthroses (immovable)
- Amphiarthroses (slightly movable)
- Diarthroses (Freely movable joints)
Describe a fibrous joint, and identify its three types.
SSG
It is a joint where the adjacent bones are united by fibrous connective tissue.
1.Suture
2. Syndesmosis
3. Gomphosis
What are two types of cartilaginous joints and examples of them?
4 syllables + think of photosynthesis
- Synchondrosis (Epiphyseal Plate)
- Symphysis (Intervertebral disks)
Identify 2 layers that make up the articular capsule of a synovial joint
Think of card #1 (1 and 3)
- Outermost fibrous membrane of dense irregular connective tissue
- An inner synovial membrane of areolar connective tissue.
What is articular cartilage?
The hyaline cartilage that covers the articulating surfaces of the bones in a synovial joint.
What are articular disks? What is their function?
They are pads of fibrocartilage found in some synovial joints. They help to stabilize the joint.
What are the 5 types of movements?
- Gliding
- Flexion
- Extension
- Rotation
- Dorsiflexion
Describe each type of movement.
Gliding –> movement of one surface over another w/o angular or rotational movement.
Flexion –> Involves a decrease in angle between anterior surfaces of articulating bones.
Extension –> Usually involves an increase in the angle between anterior surfaces of articulating bones.
Rotation –> Movement around a longitudinal axis
Dorsiflexion –> Flexion of foot at the ankle
