Chapter 9: Physical Disorders and Health Psychology Flashcards
Stress
body’s response to a stressor
Steps for Stress
Alarm, resistance, exhaustion
Steps for Stress
Alarm, resistance, exhaustion
Biology of Stress (4)
- HPA axis is activated
- Hypothalamus releases CRF and stimulated the pituitary gland
- The pituitary gland activates the adrenal gland which releases cortisol
- The hippocampus usually turns off the stress response when no longer needed, but sometimes it can be damaged by chronic stress
Individual Stress Response Differences (4)
- ability to cope
- ability to be optimistic
- psych factors (is it predictable and controllable?)
- physical health
Psychoneuroimmunology
how your psychology influences neural activity in the brain, and how that in turn affects the immune system
Psychooncology
the psychological factors that play a role in the development and treatment of cancer
Type A
A person who is hostile, high strung, and impatient
Immune System (2)
- the macrophages (leukocytes; white blood cells) are activated
- lymphocytes are activated
Immune System Branches
- The humoral
- the cellular
The Humoral Branch (3)
- B cells that make immunoglobulins (antibodies) to neutralise
- B cells that memorise the antigen for easier attack
- B cells that are signalled by the T cells to fight off the antigen
The Cellular Branch (4)
- T cells that signal B cells and trigger killer T cells
- T cells that kill the antigen
- T cells that remember the antigen for future termination
- T cells that suppress the immune response
Bio/Physical Health Affected by Psych (2)
- physiological processes (i.e. stress = high bp)
- through behaviour and lifestyle choices (wearing a seatbelt, exercise, etc)
Behavioural Medicine
knowledge derived from behavioural science applied to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment (dealing with how to get people to stay on their beds. etc)
Health Psychology
study of psych factors that promote/maintain health or assist healthcare systems and policies (more public relations, etc)
