Borderline Personality Disorder Comorbidities
- 80% comorbid with depression
- 10% comorbid with bipolar
- 10% with suidice attempts
- 25% of bulimia patients
- 20% of anorexia patients
Etiology for Borderline Personality Disorder
- highly genetically linked with depression
- high emotional reactivity is somewhat inherited
- early trauma/abuse
- impaired functioning of limbic system for emotional regulation
- high levels of shame and low levels of self esteem
Treatments for Borderline Personality Disorder
- SSRIs
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
- focuses on the reality of acceptance of difficulties while still emphasising the need for change
- focuses on interpersonal effectiveness and coping skills
- focuses on distress tolerance to decrease self-harm
