A thought/image/urge that is intrusive and that the person tries not to have
Compulsion
the coping mechanism of OCD; what are used to suppress obsessions and give relief, but are also problematic in and of themselves
Common Compulsions
Checking, ordering/arranging, washing, repetitive religious rituals
Onset
1:1 for females and males, but males have earlier symptom display
Tic Disorder
involuntary movement of the body, often associated with those in the symmetry category of OCD
Thought-Action Fusion
when bad thoughts are thought to be/evaluated as just as bad as the action
Etiology of OCD
anxiety concerning additional thoughts of the nature that they’re trying to avoid, thought action fusion, highly related to religious responsibility
Treatment for OCD
SSRIs, Exposure and Ritual Prevention, CBT, and psychosurgical procedures as the last resort
Body Dysmorphic Disorder
characterised by a preoccupation with a trait, seen as a deformity, and isn’t very noticeable to others
BDD and Suicide
high risk of suicide attempts
Treatment for BDD
SSRIs, ERP, CBT, high comorbidity with SAD
Hoarding Disorder
characterised by an excessive acquisition of items,
living in a grossly disorganised environment
maladaptive coping mechanisms
need for control over posessions
strong emotional attachment to items/
inability to discard anything
Hoarding Disorder Ad. Info
~50yo when seeking treatment
there are animal hoarders!!
Trichotillomania
and Excoriation
urge to pull hair and urge to pick skin
often co-occur with OCD
PANDAS and PANS can be linked to these and OCD
