Chapter 9 Male Reproduction Flashcards
Leydig cells or interstitial cells
Specialized cells that lie adjacent to seminiferous tubules. They produce testosterone.
Parenchymal tissue
All body organs have these distinctive cells they perform the essential function of the organ.
Example: the seminiferous tubules, are parenchymal tissue, their essential function is to manufacture spermatooza for the testes organ.
Prepuce
Foreskin; fold of skin covering the tip of the penis.
Prostate gland
Exocrine gland at the base of the male urinary bladder. The prostate secretes one of the fluid parts of semen into the urethra during ejaculation.
Scrotum
External sac that contains the testes.
Semen
Spermatozoa and seminal fluid ( prostatic and seminal vehicle secretions), discharged from the urethra during ejaculation
Seminal vesicles
Paired sac- like exocrine glands that secrete fluid (a major component of semen) into the vas deferents
Seminiferous tubules
Narrow, coiled tubules in the testes that produce sperm.
Spermatozoa (plural) or spermatozoon
Sperm cell
Stroma or stromal tissue
All body organs have supportive, connective tissue. Like blood vessels, muscles.
Testis ( one)
Testes (plural)
Male gonad ( testicle) produces spermatoza and hormone testosterone
Testosterone
Hormone secreted by the interstitial tissue of the testes; responsible for male characteristics
Vas deferens
Ductus deferens
Narrow tube ( one on each side) carrying sperm from epididymis toward urethra.
Spermatozoon
Sperm cell, male sex cell. 1/3 the size of a red bld cell. Consists of a head contains nucleus and chromosomes and tail consisting of a flagellum. Lives only 3-5 days.
Andr/o
Male
Androgen
Andr/o = male -gen = substance that produces
Testosterone is an androgen.
The testes in males and the adrenal glands in both men and women produce androgens.
Balan/o
Glans penis
The bulbous part near the tip of the penis. It’s as sensitive as the clitoris on a woman
Comes from the Greek word balanos meaning acorn.
Crypt/o
Hidden
Example: cryptorchidism is a congenital condition, one or both testicles do not descend, by the time of birth, into the scrotalg sac from the abdominal cavity.
cryptorchidism
a congenital condition, one or both testicles do not descend, by the time of birth, into the scrotalg sac from the abdominal cavity.
Surgery to correct this is called orchiopexy
